The Bavarian dialect

Not all Bavarians Dialects are the same!

Depending on the region, people in Bavaria speak the Bavarian, Franconian, Swabian and East Franconian dialects.

Each of these dialects has different regional variants and differences.

But don't worry, standard German is also understood here and many people speak several other languages in addition to English. :-)

By the way: How did Bavaria get its “y” in the word "Bayern"?

Otto's father, King Ludwig I of Bavaria, was a great admirer and fan of Greek antiquity and Hellenistic culture. Bavaria owes Ludwig I, among other things, its "y", because it was he who issued an official decree in 1825 that "Baiern" should in future be written with the Greek Ypsilon.

Bayerische Musik/Bavarian music

Bavarian music is In – but different than expected

There is a wide range of musical styles, ranging from folk music to hits to modern pop. Artists often combine traditional melodies with contemporary elements.

Songs in the Bavarian dialect are particularly popular with younger people. The lyrics reflect life in an unvarnished and not-so-serious way. In Bavaria you can also hear rap in the Bavarian dialect.

We have put together a few cheeky but funny titles for you. - Bavaria people don't take themselves too seriously :-)
